After
a good night's sleep we woke up to a dull and
rainy day .We got ready, had our breakfast at
hotel and left for train station in the
tram.Since there was a facility to leave our
luggage at hotel we carried only handy luggage
with us that we would be travelling with for the
next 9-10 days before we got back to Zurich.Once
at train station we boarded the train for Lucerne
at platform no 4. The Train journey was just one
hour and we were only people in the first class
compartment.
Luzern
(Lucerne in German) is a very nice city. It is a
tourist city in general but its first impression
is a lively one. As soon as one gets out of train
station there are trams/buses everywhere you see
for the main bus / tram station is just opposite
the train station (Bahnhof).
We as usual collected information about the city
, its attractions and also reservations / tickets
to Mt Titlis from Information Booth at Bahnhof.
This morning we had validated
our Swiss Pass that we had bought back in
USA. There are several such passes available for
tourists in Switzerland . These passes allow
unlimited travel on all major public transports
in Switzerland. This is a major plus point and
definitely very economical. Since all cities have
an excellent public transport service this proves
to be very useful. We also used it for travel
between cities and didn't have to buy tickets.
However keep it handy everytime you travel , the
ticket checker is sure to come by to check your
tickets. Taking tram no 2 to Hirzenhof stop we
reached our destination - Best Western Hotel
Rothaus which was 2 mins walking from the stop.
Since the room was not ready to be occupied
outright we waited for 15-20 minutes. After
getting into room we got fresh and left to see
Luzern city - we had half a day on our hands.
Taking tram no. 2 again we reached Bahnhof , had
a quick fast food lunch at Subway. We then decided
to see the Kapell Bridge which was not very far
from Bahnhof. Infact it is right opposite.
Kapell
Bridge is a very old covered wooden
bridge. It has beautiful flowers on either
sidewalls on the outside. There is a tower which
is closed for general public. This bridge is
across the River Ruess .
There are several other small bridges across the
same river but none as distinct as this one. All
bridges in general connect the old and new city.
In the old city though no vehicles are allowed
only pedestrians. There are several small
bistros/cafes and restaurants along the bank of
this river. After clicking some pictures and
walking across the bridge we took tram no 1.
To Lion
Monument close to Lowenplatz stop.
This is a monument to all those slain at the
Tulieries in Paris in 1792. Monument is in form
of a slain lion on his dead bed. It is carved in
natural stone. We returned back to hotel and took
little rest. While Aai-Baba rested we went out to
see the Musegg wall and its towers. Unfortunately
it closes by 7 PM hence we couldn't see the full
wall and towers. This wall is an old city wall
with 9 towers. We could only go up to the third
and see it from outside. Although for the first
time we saw Swiss cows with the tinkling cows
bells hanging from their necks. We came back to
hotel and decided to go for dinner. It pays to
keep in mind that all restaurants usually close
by 10 PM so buy dinner in time. We had pizza for
dinner and went home to a good night's sleep. We
had to get up early next morning for our
excursion to Mt. Titlis.
