-Lucerne -Mt. Titlis |
We
got ready , had our breakfast and hurried to the
station for a trip to Mt. Titlis.
We
took a train to Engelberg from Luzern. The
station was a few kms away from the cable car
station which would take us to Mt. Titlis. We had
to climb 10,000 feet in the cable car. The first
part was in simple cable car
which was a four seater and the
remaining in what is called RotAir.
This is a big cable car ...just one car which
accommodates about 25-30 people. The smaller cars
were coming in at station continuously. We had to
get in as it moved slowly. The doors closed after
sometime automatically and then it started its
journey up the mountain. The view it provided was
simply spectacular. We could actually see
ourselves moving higher and higher and the
station and cars and people started getting
smaller and diminished after some time. Once out
of this car we got into the rotair. This cable
car is unique in the sense that the base /floor
rotates as it moves up, so everyone gets a 360
degrees view of the surroundings. One
thing we noted here was the little
poster/information banner inside the car it read
" Vishwa me pehle ghoomne waale gondola
me aapka swagat hai " . This was
written in a number of languages besides Hindi
but seeing our very own Hindi made us feel proud.
The rotair rotating us took us to 3020 mtrs /
10,000 ft above sea-level to top of Mt. Titlis.
As soon as we got out we entered the observation
deck building which was closed. We climbed one
floor to reach the open deck where there was
nothing but snow. The temperature was about 0 /
-1 degs , but we hardly felt it as it was very
very sunny. The intensity of the sun was
nullifying the effect of the snow. Although it
was quite cold in the shade. We went out and
enjoyed ourselves, clicked a few snaps. There was
a thick blanket of snow where ever we looked as if
someone had painted it white. There were a few
black spots seen in the snow , we soon realized
it was people trekking / hiking in the snow. It
was quite crowded the day we visited ..there were
also two groups from SOTC.
After
a little while Aai - Baba sat at the open-air
restaurant/snack bar eating french fries while
Sandeep and myself went a little further to check
what more was there to see. We saw there were a
couple of other fun activities around there. First
there was this fun-ride which was a open kind of
trolley which took us beneath to a lower level of
snow. This was little frightening. It was like
sitting in chair and gliding gently down a wire ,
but it was fun. Once at lower level we could see
many people skiing and ice-skating. There was
another fun activity down here - Snow Disk Ride.
This disk was simple plastic tyre ..strong
plastic ofcourse...one could just sit in and
glide down the little slope on the snow. Looking
at it sent chills down once back....dare to do it
? It didn't look difficult to sit in the disk but
gliding down seemed a little tricky so deciding
not to attempt it we just watched people do it.
We also saw some people on ice-scooters. It was
getting late and we returned back to the top in
the trolley. Then Aai came along with us to play
in the snow ...we played a for a while throwing
snow at each other , clicked some snaps. Sandeep
and myself even slid down a snow slope just lying
down on it ...it was fun but not thrilling as the
slope was not much. After all the enjoying we
decided to have our meal , we were all very
hungry by now. We found an Indian restaurant (yes
even at 10,000 ft) and settled for some samosas,
rice and cake. After a little rest we started our
descent down the mountain the same way we came
up. Taking a train to Luzern from Engelberg we
reached Luzern by about 6:30 PM. It has been a
long day . we rested for an hour or so and then
left for dinner. That night we had dinner at
Kaanchi another Indian restaurant we had spotted
the earlier day. Back to hotel for a sound sleep.
